Dental implants are advertised and promoted often by practitioners in our industry. It’s important to know exactly what they are, and why they are used.
There are three parts to a dental implant. The first is the body of the implant which is placed in the bone in the space where the tooth root used to be present. The body of the implant requires a three-month period for the bone to grow around it without being disturbed by chewing. Then, an abutment (crown connector) and crown are created at a dental lab, and cemented to the implant body. These three items are designed to fit a person’s bite so that chewing is normal.
A dental implant is a great choice to replace a tooth for a number of reasons:
- Stops teeth around the missing tooth from moving into the open space.
- Implants act like regular teeth and don’t connect to other teeth like a dental bridge would. You can floss and brush them like normal teeth.
- Implants save the bone in the space of the missing tooth. If no tooth or implant is presence, the bone with shrink over time.
