Double-Teaming Tooth Decay

The statistics around tooth decay and our youth are staggering.

ada_sealants_work_facebookA 2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey revealed that tooth decay is the most common disease in children ages six to 11 (21%) and adolescents ages 12 to 19 (58%). And it affects more than just a young person’s mouth, leading to concentration and self-esteem issues and resulting in more than 51 million hours of missed school each year.

But for dental practitioners and parents alike, the American Dental Association shared some encouraging findings recently. The ADA now has evidence that dental sealants are effective in preventing and treating tooth decay.

Known in the industry as “pit-and-fissure” sealants, research has proven that children that receive these treatments are 80% less likely to develop tooth decay. The sealants have proven to be far more effective than basic fluoride varnishes (toothpaste); which isn’t to say we advise your child to stop brushing his or her teeth, but instead combine the two preventive measures.
